Mitch Revs Gallery opening at The Junction

Less than four months after signing the lease on a shopfront, the team behind Mitch Revs Gallery is set to open the doors on a new creative space at The Junction.

Located right in the heart of the popular Newcastle shopping strip, the gallery-slash-store on Union Street replaces the brand’s former home on Hunter Street.

On Saturday 25 March, it will host its grand opening event from 10am to 4pm.

To mark the occasion artist Mitch Revs will be painting a canvas in the shop’s front window.

The one-of-a-kind piece will later be going home with one lucky shopper.

By purchasing anything from a $5 keyring, stubby-holder, air-freshener, beach towel, framed print, puzzle, homeware or giftware item in-store on Saturday, the original Mitch Revs painting, valued at $10,000, will find a new owner.

The event is designed to bring a good vibe to the start of the next chapter of a dream that began on Hunter Street half a decade ago.

What Mitch really wants is for people to feel welcome in the space.

Too often, he says, people are intimidated by galleries.

“You see them standing outside and looking in like they want to go and check out the artwork, but they feel like they have to buy something,” he said.

“Just come on in, art is about feeling something.

“When I see people standing in front of my paintings for like 20 minutes having a laugh every now and then, I love that. It reminds me of those Where’s Wally moments you’d have as a kid.

“This type of art is meant to be fun.”

The space itself, opposite The Junction Fair Shopping Centre, is decked out in a style that has become synonymous with the iconic Newcastle artist.

Famed for his comic interpretations of the city’s best beaches and the antics of its locals, Revs is also an experienced home renovator.

And, it shows.

From its polished concrete flooring to its decadent lighting, its geometric-shaped fixtures alongside curved features, and a splash of green plants.

It’s a style that looks both effortless and inviting.

And, then there’s the feature wall that boasts turquoise-coloured VJ paneling in a hue that can only be described as ‘Mitch Revs blue’.

Despite being delayed a week by an unfortunate break-in at the new address, Mitch says the team are keen to see as many visitors as possible on Saturday.

“We’re loving being here on Union Street and we’ve been working hard to get ready for this day so I hope everyone comes down to check it out,” he said.

Mitch Revs Gallery is located at 203 Union Street, The Junction.
