A woman who worked as a midwife has been granted conditional bail following the death of a baby during a home birth in Newcastle last year.

Oyebola Coxon, 36, appeared before Bail Division Court 2 on Thursday 14 August after being charged with manslaughter and reckless grievous bodily harm.

It’s claimed the practicing midwife attended a premises in Wallsend on Wednesday 2 October 2024 to assist a woman with a home birth.

Police allege that over the following two days, she did not act upon signs of complications and requests by the local mother to attend hospital.

The woman eventually attended John Hunter Hospital where the baby was delivered by emergency caesarean on Friday 4 October.

Police were informed the mother and newborn suffered significant medical complications as a result of the incident.

Sadly, the baby boy died in hospital on Thursday 10 October.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District began inquiries under Strike Force Girona.

Detectives then arrested Coxon at Newcastle Police Station about 8.30am on Thursday 14 August.

The matter is due to return to court in October.

In the meantime, Coxon isn’t allowed to act, practice or educate any person relating to any birth or pregnancy.

She must also surrender her Italian and Australian passports and report to Nelson Bay Police Station daily.
