Memories of Maitland Hospital on show

The Maitland Hospital’s 170-year past will be celebrated in a new exhibition.

A Conspicuous Object: The Maitland Hospital will feature at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) from August, acknowledging the hospital’s role within the community throughout the years.

A collection of words and pictures are set to celebrate the past, present and future of the iconic site in the lead up to its 2022 opening in Metford.

The new hospital development site is expected to be open August 2021, costing an estimated $470 million.

The initiative is supported by the Hunter New England Local Health District and NSW Health Infrastructure.

The community is invited to share their memories, stories and photographs about people, places, objects, and events that will ultimately feature on a website.

The exhibition is expected to open in August 2021 and run until February 2022.

MRAG director Gerry Bobsien said history relied on the sharing of such stories.

“Maitland Hospital has serviced the community for generations,” he said.

“In that time, many stories and memories have been created that are being showcased through various artworks.

‘We’re encouraging members of the community to share their experiences of Maitland Hospital and learn from others through these engaging works.

“Visit the website, browse the stories and artworks, and share your memories.”
