McCaffrey Drive slated for closure during Inner City Bypass weekend work

SHARE

McCaffrey Drive will be closed in both directions over the next two weekends due to the construction of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.

The work forms part of the Rankin Park to Jesmond section of the project to continue installing the final layer of asphalt (wearing course) and complete line marking.

It’s scheduled to take place from 7pm on Saturday 14 March to 5am on Monday 16 March and from 7pm on Sunday 22 March to 5am on Monday 23 March, weather permitting.

The closure of McCaffrey Drive will occur between Marshall Street and Lookout Road, along with the northbound off-ramp and the bridge at the Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive intersection.

A Transport for NSW (TfNSW) spokesperson said the work would force changed traffic conditions in the area.

“Motorist access along Lookout Road will be maintained with vehicles diverted onto the Newcastle Inner City Bypass southbound on-ramp and managed via single lane contraflow,” he explained.

“Detours of up to five kilometres are in place during the work, which may add 15 minutes to your journey.

“The bus stops west of Marshall Street will be closed, too, while the one opposite Elbrook Drive is being relocated west of the Elbrook Drive intersection.

“Pedestrian and cyclist access continues along McCaffrey Drive and the eastern side of Lookout Road.

“Traffic control, reduced speed limits and signage will also be in place.

“Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes via Lake Road, Main Road, Macquarie Road and Hillsborough Road, when suitable, to reduce wider network impacts.

“Heavy vehicles with ground contact or overall width greater than three metres must contact the project team at least one day ahead of movement on 1800 818 433.

“Significant delays will occur if they fail to do so.

“Freight operators are advised the project operates on UHF channel 52 at the Southern Interchange.”
