Singleton mayor Sue Moore has expressed her concerns about the funding stalemate surrounding the town’s police station.
While the community’s been calling for a new 24-hour-manned facility for several decades, only $5 million was allocated towards an upgrade to the Hunter Street site in this week’s NSW State Budget.
The Singleton LGA faired quite well from Treasurer Daniel Mookhey’s financial plan, which included money for the continued construction of the New England Singleton Bypass and enhancements to the Golden Highway at Muddies Creek.
But, Cr Moore admitted she wanted more detail on what the people of Singleton could expect to see for their police station in 2024/2025.
“The NSW Government promised $12 million for the project in May 2021 to replace the current heritage-listed building,” she said.
“So, I certainly welcome $5,272,000 (from the 2024 budget) for the police station.
“However, it’s been three years since it was promised.
“And, I’m very keen to know what that money will deliver in the year to come.
“There’s been very little information about what the new police station will look like for Singleton… and when our community and our local police officers can expect to see the new facility in place.”
Currently, the Hunter Valley Police District is based in Muswellbrook.
But, the Singleton station remains a key item on the Singleton Advocacy Agenda.
The building has been serving the area since 1867 and poses challenges because of the size of the Singleton community and modern policing.
“It’s a credit to the NSW Government they have recognised that new police facilities are desperately needed in Singleton to best serve our growing population,” Cr Moore said.
“And, a significant proportion of the money that was promised has been included in this budget.
“However, we’ve been waiting for 157 years for any upgrades to the police station in Singleton and another three for any progress on the commitment for a replacement.
“I hope Minister for Police Yasmin Catley will have more information for us soon following on from the budget announcement and I’m happy to work with the government to assist in any way.”
