Max Adventure Race to test competitors this weekend

“Short, fast and fun” – that’s how competitors describe the Max Adventure Race Series set to return to Lake Macquarie this weekend.

Touting its suitability for “anyone and everyone with a real sense of adventure”, the popular event is designed to offer an introduction to the sport of adventure racing.

The Lake Macquarie Max Adventure Race starts and finishes at Wrightson Park, Cams Wharf, on Saturday 11 February.

It is the first of five events, which make up the 2023 series.

Competitors will run clifftop coastal trails and ride the winding Wallarah Peninsula tracks before kayaking Lake Macquarie.

“Adventure racing is a fast-paced, exciting outdoor sport that’s growing in popularity in Australia,” race director Mark Roberts said.

“Teams of two must work together, using a map to navigate around the unmarked course collecting checkpoints along the way.

“They will swap between trail running, mountain biking, and kayaking; race times range from three to six hours depending on the team’s fitness levels and navigation skills.”

Race options include a kids’, novice and classic adventure course.

“It’s going to be a very full day of adventure and family fun,” Roberts added.

“There are various race options to suit all abilities and ages from the novice course, which is ideal for those new to the sport, the classic course for teams looking for a longer challenge, and the kids’ course that’s perfect for young adventurers.”

The event will kick off at 6.30am.

The Max Adventure Race Series is designed for teams of two, competing together in each discipline, to navigate and complete the designated course in the minimum amount of time possible.

Teams visit each checkpoint in turn by foot, mountain bike and kayak.

Kayaks and paddles are supplied by Max Adventure Races and included in entry costs.

Prizes are awarded to the top three teams in each category.
