Matt and Brett: Our new Book Club

SHARE

We’ve recently started a book club with a group of friends and it’s honestly the best idea we’ve had in ages.

If you think it all sounds a bit boring, stay with us here, while we explain how our book club is a bit different to those you might need a library card for.

The concept is simple, get a group of like minded friends together, pick a day of the week or month, whatever works for you, settle on a location (for us it’s the local yacht club with great wine and fantastic views) and then everyone brings along a holiday brochure (either physical or online, it doesn’t matter).

The general idea is that we all get to present our option for a group holiday.

We spend a few ‘meetings’ discussing all of the options and then, here comes the good bit … we book it!

Because we’re multi-taskers we can have a few ‘books’ on the go at any one time.

Road trip weekends, a group flight north to escape the cold and a big annual holiday.

Once each holiday is booked, we then move on to booking all of the additional elements of the holiday, whether that be tours, activities, dinners etc. this keeps our book club busy and engaged year round.

Unlike some other book clubs, there’s no pressure to pretend you’ve read the book when you haven’t.

Everyone gets a say, nobody has to analyse the deeper meaning of anything and the only plot twist is when someone suggests a destination that nobody else had considered (or heard of).

Add an extra glass of wine or two and suddenly holiday planning becomes a very serious literary pursuit.

We’re off to China for a fortnight early next year and we’re looking at a group weekend away somewhere on the beach in summer.

Organising these will keep our book club engaged for at least the next three months, by which time we will start the whole process all over again.

What do you think?
