Matt and Brett: New year’s reservations

SHARE

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had (or is still having) a great holiday season.

As we look forward to the year ahead, we’ve already seen lots of articles with hacks to maximise your leave days for leisure time.

That’s why we are replacing New Year’s resolutions with new year’s reservations.

Having holidays to look forward to always makes the 9 to 5 grind easier to take, so why not measure 2026 in experiences rather than things.

We’ve decided to start easy with organising a long weekend away for each of our birthdays.

That’s February and May taken care of and, a bonus, both are in shoulder season.

With Easter being a bit expensive, we are looking at a camping trip to squeeze the last out of the good weather and the June long weekend seems like the perfect time to break out the winter woolies, brace for some shopping, coffee and culture and fly south to Melbourne (this one has become a bit of an annual tradition for us).

We see the second half of the year as still a work in progress.

But, New Zealand is always front of mind for an extension of the October long weekend and we’ve been threatening a Christmas away from home for years.

So, maybe 2026 is the year.

If you are planning a potentially expensive holiday for 2026, our tip is to book as early as possible and take advantage of the shoulder season, especially for Europe.

You might be lucky enough to avoid the crowds as well as the cost.

Our final tip is to be open to some spontaneous travel in 2026.

If you see a last-minute deal and you can grab it, then why not!

Life is busy and sometimes it’s hard to get on the treadmill.

However, if you make some plans now, you are locked in to some guaranteed bites of holiday happiness throughout the year.

Bring on the new year’s reservations.
