Radio star dives into Harbour Swim for Got Your Back Sista

She’s been a radio personality, psychologist, Jeanswest model, Citizen of the Year finalist, International Woman’s Day advocate and breast cancer survivor.

And, on 26 January, Martine Patterson will add Newcastle Harbour swimmer to her resume.

Known as Martini Mornings to her radio fan base, she’ll don a pair of speedos and plunge into the Hunter River on Thursday for the 2023 Australia Day Newcastle Harbour Swim.

When she does she’ll have just one thing in mind – Got Your Back Sista

Less than 12 months ago, Martine underwent a double mastectomy following her third breast cancer experience.

A series of medical complications from the breast cancer treatment led to the removal of her stomach, gall bladder, half her liver and bowel.

She was told she could only ever consume fluids, sleep in an upright position and have restricted movement in her upper body and abdomen.

But, Martine is defying the odds and is determined to switch her focus to a charity she is passionate about.

“I had such an amazing tribe to support myself and my kiddies over the past few years of cancer treatment and the subsequent life changes,” she said.

“So, I really want to give back to a movement doing so much in our community such as Got Your Back Sista whose purpose is close to my heart.”

Got Your Back Sista’s vision is to see women and their children happy, thriving and living independently after escaping the trauma of family violence.

Offering benevolent relief and support to women and children escaping domestic violence and are at risk of living below the poverty line, Got Your Back Sista gives them a hand up to begin again by providing furniture and household items to set up a safe home free from violence.

They also empower women to thrive by running courses and programs to rebuild their confidence, self-esteem, physical and emotional wellbeing and create pathways to study and employment.

Martine continues to be a cancer advocate as a woman with Stage 3 breast cancer, but she also has a special passion for helping women.

Meet her, and the Got Your Back Sista team, after she completes the swim on Thursday 26 January at Queens Wharf, Newcastle.
