Marine Rescue issue urgent warning after boat overturns, man rescued

SHARE

Marine Rescue are urging the boating community to take extra care on the water this weekend as the region braces for hazardous surf and dangerous winds.

The reminder comes after the Lake Macquarie unit answered a call for help on Saturday afternoon when a boat overturned in waters off Coon Island.

MRLM volunteers John, Louise and Anna responded to a triple-zero call just after midday.

The group immediately dispersed a rescue vessel toward the popular sand island, before finding a male in his 40s in the water.

He was transferred to the response vessel at approximately 12:30pm and returned to the Pelican Boat Ramp with his badly damaged boat.

“With the bad weather that we are experiencing, have a second thought if you are thinking of heading out onto the water this weekend,” Marine Rescue’s Garry Luxton said.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the Hunter for the period ending midnight Sunday 3rd July.

Warnings include heavy rainfall, damaging winds, hazardous surf and localised flooding.

Mr Luxton says boaters are best equipped if they log on to the Marine Rescue app before they head out on the water.

The app will ask for a boat registration number, where the boat is leaving from, where it’s heading, what time a boater plans to return, the number of people on board and a mobile phone number.
