A 69-year-old man was seriously injured after being allegedly stabbed by another male outside a Merewether sports club on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to the premises on Caldwell Street about 7.40pm on 22 March following reports on an assault.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attended and found a man – who was working as a musician at Club Merewether, formerly Merewether Bowling Club – had allegedly been stabbed several times in the chest and back.

The 69-year-old was treated by a doctor at the scene before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

They then conveyed him to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The other male left the area prior to police arrival.

Officers and Newcastle City detectives began an investigation.

Following inquiries, they arrested a 53-year-old man at a home in Stockton about 1.40am on Monday 23 March.

He has been taken to Newcastle Police Station where investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au
