A serious two-car motor vehicle accident at Lake Macquarie this afternoon has resulted in one man being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) was tasked by NSW Ambulance to Rathmines at 4.45pm following reports of a head-on collision.
Police and emergency services worked for some time to free the male.
Paramedics and the chopper’s critical care medical team treated and stabilised a 63-year-old, who suffered head injuries and suspected broken legs.
“The gentleman has been placed in a medically-induced coma,” a WRHS operation spokesperson said.
“He’s being road transported by NSW Ambulance, with our critical care medical team escorting them, to John Hunter for further treatment.
“Another three people – a second man, aged in his 40s, and two children – were also taken to hospital suffering minor injuries.”
