A man has been placed behind bars, charged with the murder of a man fatally stabbed in Hamilton South last month.

Emergency services were called to Hassall Street on Saturday, 11 July, 2026, at 3.30pm, following reports of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, Newcastle police found 42-year-old Stephen Morris suffering a stab wound.

Mr Morris was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene before he was rushed to the John Hunter Hospital.

Sadly, he could not be saved and died a short time later.

Strike Force Favalo, established by Newcastle Detectives and assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad to investigate the incident, made a breakthrough this morning.

About 7.15am today (4 August, 2026), Strike Force Detectives, assisted by Northern Region OSG, the Dog Unit and Police Rescue, made their way to an address in Hamilton South.

A 27-year-old man was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail ahead of facing Bail Division Court 2 tomorrow (5 August, 2026).
