A 53-year-old man will face court after being charged with attempted murder following a stabbing at a Newcastle sports club at the weekend.
Emergency services were called to the premises on Caldwell Street, Merewether, about 7.40pm on Sunday 22 March.
At the scene, officers attached to Newcastle City Police District were told the man, local musician Greg Bryce, had allegedly been stabbed several times – near the entrance of Club Merewether, formerly Merewether Bowling Club – by another believed to be known to him.
The 69-year-old was treated by a doctor, for stab wounds to his chest and back, before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.
He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Detectives immediately began an investigation into the incident.
Following inquiries, the 53-year-old was arrested at a home in Stockton about 1.40am on Monday 23 March.
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with attempted murder (DV) and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic).
He’ll now front Bail Division Court 2 on Monday 23 March.
