A jet skier who carelessly struck local swimmer Don McLachlan at Dixon Park Beach last weekend will face the consequences of his actions.
The 36-year-old was issued with a Court Attendance Notice (CAN) following the incident on Saturday 10 August.
About 7.30am, a week ago, patrolling officers attached to Newcastle City Police District located a man who had suffered injuries while swimming.
They were also informed the 71-year-old’s wetsuit was ripped to shreds from the encounter with the jet ski.
Mr McLachlan was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital with a severe laceration to his shoulder.
He was later released, however the shocking episode resulted in City of Newcastle councillors seeking better safety measures at local beaches.
Following police inquiries, a man was charged with operate recreational vessel negligently.
He was given a CAN to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 3 October.
