Man charged following alleged armed robbery at Rutherford

A 23-year-old man will front court after allegedly robbing a service station in Maitland on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the premises on the New England Highway, Rutherford, about 5.30am on 27 May.

At the scene, police received information a male threatened an employee with a knife before leaving with cash.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter PD then started inquiries into the incident.

About 11.40am, on the same day, they arrested a man at a home on Garwood Street, Rutherford.

During a search of the property, they allegedly located and seized cash and a knife.

The man was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.

After being formally refused bail, he’s set to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 22 July.
