A man has been arrested and charged over alleged drug and driving offences following a nearly two-week investigation by Newcastle City Highway Patrol.

He first attracted attention for an incident in Tingira Heights on Tuesday 4 February.

Police were called to Violet Town Road, following reports a car had crashed into a fence.

Upon arrival, an officer approached a Ford Ranger utility parked at the scene.

Police attempted to speak with the driver when the vehicle reversed and struck the officer with the side mirror of the utility.

Only minor bruising was reported.

The officer instructed the driver to stop, however, he left the scene in the Ford Ranger.

Inquiries into the incident began shortly after.

Nearly two weeks later, about 2.15pm on Monday 17 February, police stopped a Volkswagen Golf at Perkins Street in Newcastle.

A spokesperson said officers believed the driver of the vehicle was the same one as the Ford Ranger at the incident on Tuesday 4 February.

During a subsequent search of the Volkswagen, authorities allegedly located and seized a knife, a baseball bat, three resealable bags of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, and a bag containing three pills.

The 22-year-old man was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station, where he was laid down with eight drug and vehicle-related charges.

The offences were not stop vehicle when directed to do so, cause bodily harm by misconduct – in charge of motor vehicle, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, use Class A vehicle number plate obscured/defaced, possess/attempt to, prescribe restricted substance, possess prohibited drug (two counts), and custody of knife in public place.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday 18 February.
