A man will face court at the weekend after being charged with attacking another person with a hammer in Lake Macquarie on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to a home on Manuel Street about 7.30am on 21 March, following reports a male had broken into a house and assaulted the occupant.

On arrival, officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District located a 34-year-old with serious head injuries.

They were told he was in the house when a 51-year-old – known to him – broke into the premises and allegedly hit him with the hammer.

The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Officers then found a hammer at the scene.

The weapon was taken to be forensically examined.

A short time later, police arrested a 51-year-old man on Clare Street, Glendale.

He was taken to Toronto Police Station and charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence-people there and reckless wounding (DV).

After being refused bail, he’ll front Bail Division Court on Sunday 22 March.
