A 40-year-old man has been charged after two people were allegedly threatened with a knife at Horseshoe Beach earlier this week.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District were called to the area about 5.15pm on Wednesday 12 August following reports two men had been confronted in the car park by an armed man.

Police allege the two men backed away before officers arrested a 40-year-old man nearby a short time later.

Checks revealed the Bar Beach man was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

A knife was seized at the scene and sent for further examination.

The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged in relation to the outstanding warrant with stalking or intimidation, custody of a knife in a public place and failing to appear in accordance with a bail acknowledgment.

He was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Local Court 2 on Friday 14 August, where bail was again refused.

He is due to appear before Maitland Local Court on Wednesday 19 August in relation to those matters.

Following further inquiries into the Horseshoe Beach incident, police charged the man with being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence involving intimidation and using a knife in a public place to cause a person to fear for their safety.

He remains in custody and is due to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 20 August.
