A man will face Newcastle Local Court next week after threatening a car owner in the CBD while armed with a syringe.
Police were called to Perkins Street about 7.30am on Friday 8 November following reports of an attempted robbery.
But, an unusual sight greeted them.
At the scene, they were informed a male was standing near his car when he was approached by another unknown man, who allegedly demanded the keys to the vehicle.
He then moved away while the other fellow attempted to start it.
However, the car owner, still in possession of the keys, locked the assailant in the vehicle and contacted the police.
Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District arrested the man following a brief struggle.
They will allege in court he also attempted to enter the car of a woman a short time earlier.
A subsequent search of the man’s possessions revealed an amount of methamphetamine, as well as ID and bank cards believed to be stolen.
The 25-year-old was charged with seven offences at Newcastle Police Station:
- Aggravated assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle armed with weapon
- Stalk/intimidate intent fear physical etc harm
- Enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner/occupier
- Assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm
- Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty
- Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen
- Possess prohibited drug
After appearing before Paramatta Local Court on Saturday 9 November, he was formally refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 21 November.
