Maitland resident Charlotte Robb is spearheading a new pre-loved clothing event this weekend to raise funds and awareness for the local fight against domestic violence.
Fashioned For Freedom will feature a size-inclusive pop-up of 3,000 items of clothing, shoes and accessories.
Even better, all the proceeds are going towards supporting domestic violence services in the Hunter.
Ms Robb said she was inspired to take action by the work of Gari Kuruma, a developing women’s refuge in the Hunter Valley, which has partnered with Fashioned For Freedom.
“So many of my friends had beautiful pieces of clothing in their wardrobes that were just sitting there,” she explained.
“I realised there was potential to raise money.”
According to Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) data, there were 662 domestic violence assaults in the Maitland area in the past year.
Ms Robb said there were services doing great work in the Hunter already, but more were needed.
“Due to the high rates of domestic violence in the region, further assistance is desperately required for women and children, especially those who are trying to flee,” she added.
“Chances are we all know someone who has been affected.
“So, we need to come together to say enough is enough.”
Fashioned For Freedom stands as a unique opportunity to collectively bring a diverse group of community members for fun and connection, while bringing the issue of domestic violence directly into the light.
Representatives from Gari Kuruma and other local support services will be in attendance.
“Having the faces behind emerging women’s refuges there on the day makes it so much better,” Ms Robb said.
“They are the reason behind this whole event.”
The event on Saturday 20 September starts at 10am at Hope Unlimited Church Maitland.
As well as clothes for sale, there will be barista coffee, live music and lucky door prizes.
Entry is $10.
