Maitland Showground is set to enter a new chapter thanks to a partnership between Maitland City Council and the Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association.

The three-year partnership, inked this week, will aim to secure the long-term future of the iconic Maitland venue, with both organisations working on sustainable improvements to the site and its facilities.

Several priorities have been identified for the site, including the development of a landscape master plan, road and pathway improvements, ongoing pothole repairs and continued sponsorship for key events such as the Maitland Show.

The President of the Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association, Margaret Enright, said the partnership would help to improve visitor experiences for both locals and tourists.

“By working with council to deliver key improvements to the site, we can ensure a bright future at Maitland Showground and continue to host amazing events that draw big crowds,” she said.

Maitland City Council General Manager Jeff Smith said the partnership was a commitment to ensure the longevity of the showground.

“Maitland Showground is an icon of our city, and we want to see it thrive for many years to come,” he said.

“By working together, we can create more opportunities for local events, bring greater economic benefits to Maitland and deliver an improved showground experience for our wider community.”

The partnership will also bring Maitland Showground on board as a major accommodation provider for next year’s 40th anniversary of Hunter Valley Steamfest and 20th Biennial National Rally, which is expected to bring thousands of visitors to the city.

Pending other commitments, council will allocate available staff and resources to support ongoing planning, improvements and operations at the site as part of the three-year program of works.
