Maitland City welcomes new GM Jeff Smith

SHARE

Following an extensive search, Maitland City Council has appointed Jeff Smith CPA GAICD to the role of general manager (GM).

The announcement comes after incumbent David Evans decided he would not seek the position when his contract ended in 2023.

Councillors voted unanimously in favour of selecting Mr Smith at an extraordinary meeting on Monday night.

He’ll join the organisation on a five-year contract from 3 July.

Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold said the new GM boasted an impressive almost three-decade career in the private and public sector.

“We conducted a thorough recruitment process to find the right person to lead the management of our great council operation into the future,” he explained.

“And, Jeff ticks all the boxes.

“He has a great breadth of experience, a real focus on customer service and is an exceptional financial manager.

“He’s highly-regarded and well-respected within the industry and further afield.

“So, we are extremely fortunate to have someone of his calibre join us.

“Importantly, Jeff is very down to earth, genuine and people-focused.

“He’ll be a great fit for our community and council.

“I am confident Jeff will help lead our organisation to the next level as we continue to deliver quality services and infrastructure for the people of Maitland.”

A father-of-three, and newly-minted grandfather, Mr Smith was born and bred in the Lower Hunter where he still lives with his wife and family.

Following other senior local government positions including at Port Stephens Council and Randwick City Council, he’s the current director corporate and legal of Northern Beaches Council, where he has been since 2019.

Maitland City received nearly 100 applications from across the country for the sought-after role.
