Maitland bowls over Cessnock to claim John Bull Shield

The Summit Cessnock District Cricket Association’s John Bull Shield representative team went down to Maitland by 88 runs in the final at Lorn Park at the weekend.

Competing in their fourth consecutive decider, visiting skipper Joey Butler’s horrendous toss run continued and the hosts had no hesitation batting first in the favourable conditions.

The home side was cruising at 1-133 on the back of aggressive innings’ from Josh Trappel (37) and South African Tobias Van Den Heever (52), whose half century came from just 26 balls.

Wicketkeeper Billy Amas was also productive with 31.

But, his departure started a mini-collapse, and Cessnock fought back to have Maitland all out in the 48th over for 260.

Karl Bowd opened the innings and endured the heat with a patient 62, with Tim Burton remaining unbeaten with 16.

Cessnock’s wickets were fairly evenly-distributed among Patrick Andrews (3-45 off 9), Luke Sweeney (3-42 off 9), Matt Hopley (2-61 off 10) and Jace Lawson (2-51 off 10).

However, in reply, they were all out in the 38th over for 172.

Most batsmen made starts without pushing on to that one big score needed.

Chris Murray completed a fine season at rep level with his team high score of 41, Connor Thomson was next best with a quick-fire 27, with Luke Jeans (18), Joey Barber (17), skipper Joey Butler (14) and Mark Bercini (14) all contributing.

Fletcher Cousins was the pick of the Maitland attack with the four-piece, bagging 4-32 off 6.

Harry King (2-36 off 6), Tim Burton (2-28 off 8), skipper Jordan Callinan (1-38 off 8.2) and Van Den Heever (1-0 off 1) all chipped in with scalps.

Bowd was named man-of-the-match with his controlled innings at the top of the Maitland order.

In the centenary of the Hunter Valley Region Cricket Council, Maitland held the John Bull Shield aloft for the 29th time.
