Maitland Animal Management Facility to undergo improvements

SHARE

In a bid to enhance the site moving forward, council will begin a series of improvement works at the Maitland Animal Management Facility (MAMF).

Stage one of the project involves the preparation of the East Maitland premises for increased parking, including the removal of an existing building, which is dilapidated and not able to be used as part of the MAMF.

Better utilities will also be added while Maitland City Council is also investigating opportunities for energy efficiency, through solar power and other measures.

In October, the MAMF – which is where all impounded pets in the LGA, as well as Cessnock and Dungog, are taken – closed its doors temporarily, following a parvo outbreak in the region.

The preventive step was deemed necessary after staff identified several cases of canine parvovirus.

While that had no bearing on the latest upgrades, council believes the works will improve the site for the future.

“We want to make sure the Maitland Animal Management Facility has room to expand so it can support the growing needs and demands of our community,” director city planning Matt Prendergast said.

Work will begin from Monday 5 February and take several weeks to complete.
