Mach Dan defies odds to win Newcastle Mile

Victorian pacer Mach Dan defied the odds, and the critics, to capture his second consecutive AVE Technologies Newcastle Mile on Friday night.

After drawing the outside barrier, 10, most pundits believed the Emma Stewart-trained gelding would have his work cut out for him.

But, driver Mark Pitt had other ideas.

He powered Mach Dan to glory at the Newcastle Paceway, clocking 1:51.10 to claim the spoils from a high-class field.

The six-year-old pipped Brian Portelli’s Tasty Delight by a neck to take home the trophy, with Kerryann Morris’ Petes Said So rounding out the placings.

Mach Dan will now contest the $1 Million Miracle Mile at Club Menangle on 4 March.

Owner Danny Zavitsanos, who was trackside to witness the impressive triumph, admitted he was “just stunned”.

“I’m in shock,” he said.

“I can’t believe this.

“Honestly, I didn’t think he could do that.

“This is just mind-boggling.”

In 2022, Mach Dan prevailed from barrier two, however he showed his class by winning from a tougher position this time around.

Before the feature race, Newcastle Harness Racing Club chairman Daryl Rodgers predicted the track record to fall.

But, breaking the sub-1:50.00 time will have to wait for another 12 months.
