Local surveyors measure up at state awards

SHARE

Now is the perfect time to become a surveyor.

That’s according to Mark Scanlon, who says there is a nationwide need for more registered professionals.

“There is an enormous shortage and it is right across the country,” he said.

“Surveying is one of those professions that most people don’t know anything about, they think we are just a person on the side of the road with a camera or speed radar.

“But, there is a lot more involved.

“Surveyors, and in particular those registered, are the professionals in land management and in measurement.

“So, we are the go-to experts for measuring all things because of the equipment we use and the accuracy of it.

“Any infrastructure project including roads, bridges and stormwater sewer lines all need surveyors.

“It offers wonderful career opportunities, there is so much work out there you’ll always find a job.”

Mr Scanlon’s message comes off the back of taking out a top spot at the EISSI 2021 NSW Excellence in Surveying & Spatial Information Awards.

His business, Parker Scanlon, won the best NSW Consultancy Firm title.

Operating since 2007, 2021 has proven to be a big year for the group – they also took out a national award in October.

“It feels fantastic,” Mr Scanlon said.

“It’s just a culmination of many years of tweaking systems, building teams and building culture.

“To now be recognised for it is a wonderful feeling.”

However, Parker Scanlon isn’t the only local award winner, Hunter-based surveyors Paul Mather and Rick Williams were also honoured.

Mr Williams was named Young Professional of the Year while Mr Mather took out the Professional of the Year spot.

“For three of the big awards to be given to local surveyors is quite a coup for our region,” Mr Scanlon said.
