Scone’s White Park was buzzing recently as hundreds of young cattle enthusiasts gathered for the 2025 Upper Beef Bonanza (UHBB).

The event is Australia’s largest youth beef competition, drawing nearly 700 participants and close to 480 entries.

Among the participants were students from NSW Department of Primary Industries and Reginal Development’s Tocal College who brought 12 Brangus steers and heifers.

Tocal’s pupils delivered strong results across multiple categories, highlighting the strength and depth of youth engagement in the beef sector.

In the Led Heavy Middleweight class, steer “Tocal McFlurry” placed third, while “Tocal Happy Meal” was awarded Reserve Champion Light Middleweight.

“Tocal Hamburglar” took Reserve Champion in Heavy Middleweight, with “Tocal Chicken Burger” finishing third.

The college also excelled in Junior Judging and Parading.

Jasper Anderson was named Tertiary Champion and topped Junior Judging, followed by Keeley Moore, Kasey Crebert and Chloe Riley.

Students also participated in the ICMJ Meat Judging competition at JBS Abattoir, gaining valuable experience in carcase assessment and meat cut identification.

NSW DPIRD Tocal advisory office Emorfia Cutler said Tocal pupis achieved outstanding results and learnt valuable experience.

“The Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza provides our students with a unique opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting, connect with industry professionals, and gain insights into the full spectrum of beef production,” he explained.

“Our pupils worked incredibly hard throughout the year to prepare for this event… and their results reflect their dedication and teamwork.

“We’re proud of the way they represented Tocal College.”

Preparation for the UHBB is embedded in both Certificate III and IV programs.

Certificate IV students focus on livestock nutrition, developing and managing feed rations, and mentoring Certificate III students in cattle handling and show preparation.

The Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza is more than a competition.

For Tocal students, it provides hands-on experience, teamwork opportunities, and a clear insight into the beef industry’s supply chain.
