It wasn’t exactly an audition for Australian Idol or The Voice at Flamingos Live on Friday night.
But, Paralympian Christie Dawes, NBN reporter Jane Goldsmith, Nine’s Travel Guides duo Matt and Brett, and City of Newcastle Deputy Lord Mayor Callum Pull shone brightly, performing some memorable tunes at the inaugural Melodies for Melanoma.
The event, and stage show, doubled as a fundraiser for the Hunter Melanoma Foundation (HMF).
And, as Christie belted out Pat Benatar’s Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Jane did her best Shania Twain impersonation with Man, I Feel Like A Woman, Matt and Brett recreated Dead or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), and Callum dipped into the Neil Diamond catalogue to sing Sweet Caroline, the quartet also helped amass an incredible $20,000.

HMF executive officer Claudia Tolhurst admitted she was blown away by the amount that was raised.
“We are so proud and honoured to see the community come together in such a fun and meaningful way,” she said.
“The funds, from just one night, will have a lasting impact helping us reach more people, raise awareness and ultimately save lives.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the incredible donation provided by the MacDougall Foundation to Jane’s fundraising efforts.
“It truly speaks to the idea that we are better together than apart.”
Melanoma is the most common cancer for Australians aged 20-to-39, and two-in-three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
So, the HMF’s mission is simple: to defeat melanoma.
All money raised from the night goes directly into the Hunter community, funding education programs, early detection and prevention activations, melanoma studies, and support for patients and families.
“We ensure every dollar from events like Melodies for Melanoma is injected locally through education, awareness, research or patient assistance,” Ms Tolhurst said.
“As a community-funded not-for-profit organisation, we rely on the generosity of the community to continue the important work we do in the Hunter.
“The foundation is incredibly appreciative of Christie, Jane, Matt, Brett and Callum for generously donating their time and stepping out of their comfort zones to sing for a cause.
“We are also extremely grateful to everyone who helped bring the show together including our sponsors, prize donors and volunteers.”
Due to the success of this year’s event, HMF is already looking ahead to making Melodies for Melanoma an annual fixture on Newcastle’s social calendar.
