Lighthouse Arts to breathe new life into historic site

A new mutli-arts activation in Newcastle is set to shine a light on businesses working within the arts, cultural and tourism sectors.

Led by Hunter Writers Centre, Lighthouse Arts will bring the Nobbys-Whibayganba headland cottages back to life.

It’s all thanks to City of Newcastle’s COVID-19 Industry Response program.

The funding provided will create studio spaces for Indigenous and non-Indigenous writers, musicians, visual and digital artists, to develop works for exhibitions and host events.

“We are proud to have provided $135,000 to the Hunter Writers Centre to breathe new life, vibrancy and activation to the cottages on Nobbys-Whibayganba Headland and to support COVID-affected arts and cultural practitioners in Newcastle,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

“The Hunter Writers Centre have told us that without this financial support from City of Newcastle, their reactivation of the headland cottages simply could not have happened.”

Deputy Mayor Declan Clausen added the activation shows the council’s dedication to the arts and cultural sector.

“This historic site is one of the jewels in Newcastle’s coastal crown, and has long been dormant, despite its incredible location and history,” he said.

“So many Novocastrians have lamented the long lack of activation and public access of such an amazing site, so news of its reopening to our community will be warmly welcomed by all.

“We have ensured that City of Newcastle has worked in partnership with the arts and cultural sector to once again open this magnificent site to the public, while creating and protecting jobs and promoting many amazing local artists, makers and traders and their cultural production.”

With COVID-19 significantly impacting the arts, cultural and creative industries, the Lighthouse Arts project was identified as critical to Newcastle’s post COVID-19 recovery by the City Taskforce.

This unique space for artistic collaboration celebrates one of the city’s historically significant Indigenous, wartime and maritime sites, Nobbys-Whibayganba, and features a gallery trading store, in a bid to increase tourism.
