Liberals announce candidate for Shortland tilt

SHARE

Another candidate has emerged from the wilderness in an attempt to usurp Labor from its Hunter dominance at the upcoming federal election.

Senior mining and manufacturing executive Emma King will lead the Liberal charge in Shortland, with an eye on sitting member Pat Conroy’s seat.

She’s the second party contender following Laurence Antcliff’s pre-selection for Paterson, which is currently held by Meryl Swanson.

Voters are expected to head to the polls in May.

Ms King is campaigning to deliver a better deal for local families struggling to make ends meet as the cost-of-living crisis rages out of control.

The proud Eleebana mum admitted she was deeply invested in the electorate’s future.

“My husband and I have experienced first-hand the opportunities and challenges that come with living, working and raising a family in this vibrant community,” she said.

“I know how tough local families are doing it, with charities flooded by calls for help from people struggling to pay their rents and mortgages as well as their skyrocketing food, energy and insurance bills.

“I believe Labor has failed our community, with its promises amounting to nothing.

“Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised cheaper mortgages, but an interest bill for a typical mortgage has risen $50,000 since the election.

“He promised that by 2025, household energy bills would be reduced by $275.

“Instead, everyone is paying hundreds of dollars more.

“My career has given me insight into the importance of strong economic policies for growing local industry and job creation, while my husband’s small business has provided me with great motivation to fight for other similar enterprises in our region.”

Ms King said the Liberals were focused on the delivery of more infrastructure and housing… and fighting inflation.

“As part of Peter Dutton’s team, I will be a strong voice for Shortland, bringing real-world experience, a proven strong work ethic and passion to give back to the community,” she added.

“The Liberals will get Australia back on track, delivering low inflation, cheaper energy, affordable homes and a safer community.”

Independent Philip Penfold will also contest Paterson, with The Nationals’ Sue Gilroy lining up Dan Repacholi in Hunter.
