The weather might have been gloomy but the pacing action certainly wasn’t when Leap To Fame won the AVE Technologies Newcastle Mile on Friday night.

Trainer/driver Grant Dixon guided the Queensland champion to his 10th consecutive victory in the prestigious $100,000 event at the Newcastle Harness Racing Club, booking an all-important berth in the Miracle Mile in the process.

Leap To Fame, also known as Larry, claimed the honours in convincing style, from second-placed Mach Da Vinci, with much-loved owners Kevin and Kay Seymour trackside to cheer him on.

The five-year-old is now on track to achieve what no horse has ever done before – capture the Inter Dominion, Hunter Cup and Miracle Mile treble in the same season.

Dixon was thrilled to salute the judges again.

“It worked out well,” he said.

“I was happy with the run.

“He’s definitely got the speed there to keep horses out.

“Thankfully, we’ve never really been in many situations where we’ve had to [before].

“I was sort of happy with the draw, because I thought he might have had trouble getting through, however I didn’t need to worry.”

The Seymours and Dixon will now target the $1 million Miracle Mile at Club Menangle on Saturday 9 March.

“We’re keen to get Larry home and back in his own environment, out in the paddock,” he said.

“We have got a fortnight now and, hopefully, get him where we want him.

“So, the first mission is completed.

“We’ll just travel down again in two weeks’ time and see how it all pans out.”

Kanena Provlima finished third for the combination of Kerry Ann Morris and Joshua Gallagher.

Despite a torrential downpour, the crowd braved the conditions and revelled in the family-friendly atmosphere.

Leap To Fame’s win also boosted the coffers of the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club.
