A group of leaders from across the Hunter Region braved strong winds to abseil down McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday – all in the name of charity.
The 2019 Leaders Leap Newcastle helped raise more than $50,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, adding on the almost $80,000 from the inaugural event last year.
“It was fantastic to see 17 local business and community leaders participating in our 2019 Leaders Leap,” WRHS regional marketing manager, Chad Griffith, said.
“Utilising their networks to crowdfund in excess of $50,000, the leaders endured blustery conditions that added to the excitement, but all completed the activity safely and many overcame their fear of heights.
“The service is extremely thankful to each of the leaders for raising greatly-needed funds, which will ensure that the Westpac rescue helicopter can continue to be here for our community 24/7.”
Newcastle Weekly journalist Ben Murphy took on the challenge this year and, despite being slightly terrified, managed to make it to the bottom.
He thanked everyone who donated towards his fundraising total, particularly the following organisations: S2F Fitness, Bolwarra Lorn Junior Soccer Club, Lorn Park Bowls Sport & Recreation Club, McLeish Estate Wines, Jess Dugan Photography, Phoenix Vet Nurse Services and Organics, and Greta Compounding Pharmacy.
