Hunter motorists will encounter changed traffic conditions this weekend as work resumes on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.
Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is focusing its attention on the northern and southern interchanges of the Rankin Park to Jesmond project.
That includes the intersection of Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive, New Lambton Heights, between 7pm on Friday 11 April to 5am on Monday 14 April.
“To carry out the work, there’ll be some modifications,” a TfNSW spokesperson said.
“Lookout Road is being reduced to one lane each way.
“And, there will be no right-hand turn movements from either road at the McCaffrey Drive intersection.

“Then, on the third weekend, which is currently scheduled from 7pm on Friday 2 May to 5am on Monday 5 May, Lookout Road will be reduced to one lane each way and McCaffrey Drive will be closed in both directions between Marshall Street and Lookout Road.

“Detours of up to five kilometres will be in place during this time, which may add up to 15 minutes of travel time to journeys.”
Heavy vehicles with a ground contact or overall width greater than three metres are advised to phone the project team at least one day ahead of movement on 1800 818 433.
Significant delays will occur if they fail to do so.
Freight operators are also advised the project operates on UHF channel 52xt the Southern Interchange.
From Sunday 13 April, there’ll be changed overnight traffic conditions on Newcastle Road at the Jesmond Interchange due to adverse weather delaying work to open the permanent right-turn lanes for motorists travelling west on Newcastle Road onto the Newcastle Inner City Bypass towards University Drive.
“This will mean vehicles travelling westbound on Newcastle Road will now turn right at the new signalised intersection before the bridge and travel underneath the third span to access the northbound lanes of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass from Thursday 1 May,” the spokesperson said.
“To minimise impacts, we’re conducting night work from 7pm to 5am between Sunday 13 April and Tuesday 15 April, as well as Tuesday 29 April and Wednesday 30 April.
“So, the eastbound lanes will be closed.
“Detours of up to 2.5 kilometres are in place during this time, which may add up to 10 minutes to travel times.

“There will also be intermittent single lane closures on the westbound lanes for Newcastle Road, as well as intermittent single lane closures on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.”
B-doubles, vehicles of wide loads (up to 4.5 metres wide) and under 5.9 metres height clearance are permitted to travel through the intersection on Newcastle Road at Jesmond.
Over-size over-mass (OSOM) operators with a ground contact wider than 3.2 metres or with overall width greater than 4.5 metres are advised to phone the team at least one day ahead of movement on 1800 818 433.
They’re advised the project operates on UHF channel 57 at the Jesmond Interchange.
