Landcare’s two decades of success in city

Thousands of volunteers and more than 200 groups: the Landcare movement has worked to make Lake Macquarie a better place for the past two decades.

This September marks the 20th anniversary of Lake Mac’s Landcare partnership, which pulls together the efforts of those groups across the city, as well as Lake Macquarie council.

Mayor Kay Fraser and NSW Landcare chief executive Adrian Zammit will acknowledge the milestone during a family-friendly event at Teralba’s Landcare Resource Centre on Saturday 14 September.

Dr Zammit praised the movement’s ongoing role in working with local communities to build more sustainable environments and agricultural practices.

“We’re only getting started – is vital that rural and urban communities continue to work together to protect natural resources and sustainable land management now and into the future,” he said.

“Landcare offers every Australian the chance to make a real difference.

“Thousands of active Landcare groups operate across NSW, boasting tens of thousands of dedicated, passionate volunteers working together on a vast range of projects.

“From sustainable land use education to waterways restoration and feral pest management, the Landcare community are the leaders in this field.”

Lake Macquarie council’s Landcare coordinator Jason Harvey said the model had seen local grassroots groups restore, rehabilitate and conserve huge tracts of land over the last 20 years.

He added Lake Macquarie Landcare’s recognition in 2016 as the best partnership in Australia demonstrated the initiative’s success.

“Without our amazing volunteers, this organisation would not exist,” he said. The official welcome for the anniversary event this Saturday will start at 1pm. It will be followed by an afternoon of live music and entertainment.
