Lambton awash with yellow blooms

SHARE

The streets of Lambton were awash with yellow this morning – the result of a local flower market and charity joining forces to spread joy among the community as the Hunter prepares for its third week of lockdown.

Newcastle Food & Flower Markets partnered with Hello Hunter to gift hundreds of blooms, including sunflowers, daffodils and wattle, to passers-by as they went about their daily exercise and essential shopping.

Market founder Jess Eckford-Aguilera said the yellow flowers were chosen as it was the colour of hope.

“Research shows the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and positively impacts social behaviour,” she explained.

“If even one person who is lagging hope picked up a flower this morning and it brightened their day, our goal was achieved.”

And, judging by the happy smiles on the faces of young and old who paraded Elder Street with their flowers in tow on Friday 20 August, their target was well and truly exceeded.

Along with the bloom, recipients received a card from Hello Hunter.

Hello Hunter was established during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020 to offer comfort, company and kindness to those feeling lonely and isolated in the community.

Co-founder Rick Prosser said the charity was thrilled to have partnered with the Newcastle Food & Flower Markets to spread some COVIDSafe connection among residents.

“We’re social creatures, and isolation has a negative impact on so many people’s mental health,” he stated.

“If, after they picked up their flower, they’re then able to set aside time to have a cup of tea and call one of Hello Hunter’s friendly volunteers for a chat then that’s a bonus.

“Many of the passers-by were so touched that even though donations for the flowers weren’t requested they insisted on giving us money to aid our efforts in supporting the community.

“Despite the hardship experienced by so many because of the lockdown, the people of the Hunter are just so kind and that’s what makes us such a strong community.”
