Lake Macquarie swimming baths plan creating waves

More swimming baths are set to join our region, with Lake Macquarie securing funding to transform the Toronto foreshore into a bathing mecca by 2024.

The development will include a jetty extension providing a fully-enclosed and netted area, a disability access ramp, and an upgrade to the amenities building.

It forms part of the multi-million-dollar Toronto Foreshore Master Plan

Modelled on the 2021 Belmont Baths revitalisation, the idea is designed to turn the Toronto waterfront into a vibrant lakeside precinct.

Regular swimmer Rod Mackay says planned improvements are welcome news.

After patronising the region’s baths for the past 50 years, he’s looking forward to creating more memories in Lake Macquarie’s waters.

“It’s great – the water is pretty warm, it’s not far from where I live, and a few laps and a cup of coffee are a great way to start the day,” he said.

Lake Macquarie City Council secured funding for the foreshore transformation when it acquired a $1 million grant from the NSW Government’s Places to Swim program.

“The lake is our jewel and our major recreational asset,” Lake Macquarie City mayor Kay Fraser said.

“Our priority is to create more areas that encourage people to swim in and use this incredible natural attraction.

“With water quality the best it has been for decades, these baths will provide a place for the community to enjoy the lake and maintain fit and healthy lifestyles.”

Design work is expected to start this year, with construction underway in mid-2024.

The swimming baths plan follows the completion of the $1.8 million Stage One Foreshore revamp in July 2022 that included a new rotunda-style pavilion, public square, terraced lawn and open space.

Overall the project is expected to cost $9 million.
