More than 1,000 athletes are expected to descend upon the Hunter this weekend for one of the region’s most popular sporting events.
After a hugely-successful edition in 2025, the Lake Macquarie Triathlon has established itself back on the national calendar with over 25% growth in participant figures from last year.
And, as an added bonus, locally-based organisers and supporters have been rewarded with Australian Championship status for the Super Sprint distance, to be raced as part of the program on Sunday 8 March.
“The festival of sport features a full morning of events including four triathlons for all standards, including juniors and stand-alone open water swimming disciplines,” said Paul Humphreys of H Events.
“Now, having achieved the goal of securing a national championship, I’m keen to snare the longer Standard Distance Australian Titles for 2027.
“The event is putting its best foot forward, attracting large numbers of competitors from Sydney and Central, North and South Coast.
“We’ll also see a strong contingent from all six Hunter-based clubs – Newcastle, Tomaree, Maitland, Singleton, Scone and Lake Macquarie.
“It’s fantastic those members have an opportunity to race near home.”
Humphreys thanked those backing the triathlon, too.
“Lake Macquarie City Council and Dantia are assisting with grant funding that looks to establish the event as an annual fixture for the region,” he said.
“We also have other local organisations and businesses lining up to support us, including The Athletes Foot, Hunter Resource Recycling and Bicycle Centre Hunter Valley.
“There is no shortage of support from service and sports clubs including the Rotary Club of Charlestown, Speers Point Sailing Club and Swansea Belmont Surf Life Saving Club, who are raising funds as part of the event.”
The program is based at Speers Point Park from 6.30am.
