Lake Mac tennis legends Barbara and Kevin Weimer honoured

Two adored Lake Macquarie residents, with a penchant for making a racquet, have been honoured with a prestigious NSW sporting acknowledgement.

Bolton Point couple Kevin and Barbara Weimer received a special Distinguished Long Service accolade at the 2023 NSW Community Sports Awards, at CommBank Stadium, on Thursday night 29 June.

The ceremony recognises outstanding achievements and contributions to grassroots sport in the state, which is largely carried out by a volunteer workforce.

The Weimers were among 23 recipients from a wide cross-section to pick up their award from the NSW Minister for Sport Stephen Kamper.

The pair established the Bolton Point Tennis Club in 1977.

Mr Weimer was elected inaugural president of the organisation, a position he still holds today, while his wife secured a spot as a general committee member.

Mrs Weimer then became club secretary in the 1980.

Fittingly, it’s a role she continues to maintain.

The Weimers’ leadership has significantly benefitted the local community of Bolton Point and surrounds, as well as other local and regional clubs who have engaged in the sport over the years.

Sport NSW chairperson Chris Hall said the duo were worthy award recipients.

“Sport in NSW relies on people such as Kevin and Barbara who have voluntarily dedicated their time over many decades,” he stated.

“Put simply, sport would not exist without them.

“It is fitting these Distinguished Long Service Award recipients are recognised and honoured.

“It’s because of their efforts that NSW remains the premier sports state in Australia.

“Their enduring contribution showcases why volunteers are the beating heart of community sport in NSW.

“And, we thank all of them for their exceptional dedication.”

The presentation evening also celebrated volunteers across 12 categories for their outstanding achievements and excellence over the past year.
