Lake Mac mayor appeals for public assistance following council fire

Lake Macquarie City mayor Adam Shultz is appealing for public assistance as investigations continue into the fire, which damaged council’s Administrative Centre.

Emergency services were called to the Speers Point building on Main Road about 3.50am on Wednesday 27 November.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews then worked to extinguish the blaze.

However, the premises sustained extensive damage with repairs estimated to cost several million dollars.

Lake Macquarie City Council has since been working closely with detectives from Strike Force Komiatum and, this week, shared CCTV footage with NSW Police of two people outside the building, shortly before the fire.

Cr Shultz urged anyone with information, or dashcam footage captured in the area from 2am to 4.30am on Wednesday 27 November, to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

“We’re grateful for the efforts and bravery of first responders to contain the fire and limit its spread,” he said.

“As well as NSW Police for its hard work rolling out this investigation.

“But, we’re keen to catch the people responsible.”

CEO Morven Cameron said council was in regular contact with Strike Force Komiatum detectives.

“They are making progress and we’ve been providing everything they have asked for,” she stated.

“We are also working with our insurers on the complex and involved task of assessing the damage and devising a recovery plan.

“We look forward to releasing more information as it comes to light.”
