Lake Mac lifeguards give Emma’s Warriors fundraising boost

They might not have claimed the overall surfing honours… but Lake Macquarie’s lifeguards were still winners in the eyes of Emma’s Warriors.

Council employees Alex Marshall, Saxon Lumsden, Connor Lee and James McMorland competed at the annual Evolution Cup event – part of the Surfest program – at Merewether Beach on Thursday 5 March.

Although still happy to finish in second place, they also managed to raise more than $6,000 to help kids suffering with leukaemia.

Lake Macquarie City councillor Jack Antcliff congratulated the quartet on its efforts.

“I challenged the team last year to increase the fundraising campaign,” he said.

“So, it’s been great to see the organisation get behind our incredible lifeguards to support the charity.

“We take our hats off to City of Newcastle for winning the Evolution Cup – a bit of friendly competition never goes astray.

“It just always makes spectating that little bit more interesting.”

Marshall, Lumsden, Lee and McMorland are no strangers to success themselves.

In fact, they’ve taken home the title five times in previous years.

Council’s manager leisure services Brad Sutton said he was proud of the team at the Evolution Cup, an event designed to unite local government organisations and raise money for those in need.

“The Lake Mac squad embodies true community spirit, showcasing diverse water skills and a strong group of talented surfers,” he explained.

“Surfing is part of our culture on the East Coast and taking on this sport while raising funds for those in need is all the more rewarding.

“Emma’s Warrior’s is an amazing local charity, founded by Alex and Brendan Walsh after their daughter Emma was diagnosed with, and recovered, from leukemia.”

Funds will support families facing long hospital stays, providing bill assistance and care packs for sick teens and tweens.
