Labor’s quest to dominate the region has intensified in recent weeks, leading into the March NSW Election.
Currently, only sitting state members Greg Piper (Lake Macquarie) and Dave Layzell (Upper Hunter) are not aligned to the party, representing their electorates as Independent and The Nationals respectively.
But, Labor is hoping that scenario changes moving forward.
It follows the announcement of Stephen Ryan (Lake Macquarie) and Peree Watson as its latest candidates.
The former launched his campaign at Toronto at the weekend, with fellow MPs Dan Repacholi (Hunter), Jodie Harrison (Charlestown) and Sonia Hornery (Wallsend) in attendance.
Mr Ryan has lived in Lake Macquarie for 14 years with his wife, where he’s worked as both a journalist and a barrister.
The 41-year-old said he understood the financial pressures on local residents as the cost of living continued to skyrocket, as well as the opportunities that education and re-training could provide.
“I love this community,” he explained.
“However, we deserve better – and only a Chris Minns’ government will provide that.
“I believe Labor will win on 25 March, so it’s imperative Lake Macquarie has a voice at the table.
“But, I also realise this will be an uphill battle.
“I won’t be taking a single vote for granted.”
Mr Ryan admitted the opportunities for the electorate were “endless”.
“However, to achieve them we need to bring back local manufacturing and elect a government who will invest in skills and TAFE,” he said.
“Labor’s plans to improve public housing, scrapping stamp duty for the bulk of first home buyers and cracking down on problem gambling have received wonderful support from the residents I’ve spoken to.”

Meanwhile, Ms Watson, the daughter of the late ex-president of the United Mineworkers Union Mick Watson, knows the importance of hard work and collaboration to deliver for the community.
She’s lived in the Upper Hunter her entire life, raising three children, and resides with her husband Ian in Branxton.
“I want to ensure the many diverse communities of the Upper Hunter receive their fair share of government resources and support,” Ms Watson said.
“I believe everyone deserves better healthcare, quality education and secure employment.”
