Kurri Kurri students take on Parliament

SHARE

Senior students from Kurri Kurri High School witnessed state politics in action first-hand during a visit to NSW Parliament House in Sydney this week.

The youngsters also had the opportunity to meet their local MP, Cessnock’s Clayton Barr, and sit in on Question Time.

While in the chamber, pupils watched members debate a range of issues including housing, foster care and energy.

Year 11 student Brianna said the experience gave her direct insights into the daily work of parliamentarians.

“It’s incredible to see how much they know,” she admitted.

“And, I learned just how much of an impact I can have on what actually happens in the world around me.”

The occasion was a part of Parliament of NSW’s Legal Studies and the Legislature program.

In 2025, almost 3000 students took advantage of the chance to gain personal experience with democratic procedures.

According to the Australian Electoral Commission, the 2025 federal election saw Gen- Z voters outnumber other generations in the booths.

So, the latest initiative presented pupils with the ability to understand Parliamentary processes outside of the classroom.

Premier Chris Minns explained a strong democracy depended on an informed and engaged community.

“The Parliament of NSW education programs give students a deeper understanding of how laws are made, how it operates and how citizens can participate in shaping their society,” he said.

“It is an important investment in civic education and the next generation of leaders.”

This year has resulted in a 41% increase in participation, so far, with more than 100 schools across NSW taking participating.

For regional areas like Kurri Kurri, a subsidy of $500 is now available to assist with associated costs.

Schools can go to the Parliament of NSW’s Parliamentary Education and Engagement website for further details.
