Those who reside in Kurri Kurri don’t mind a tipple… or two.
The 2327 postcode has been recognised as one of Australia’s biggest beer-loving towns, ranking fifth nationally in a new report examining the country’s drinking habits.
The Hunter community was the highest-ranked suburb in NSW in Endeavour Group’s inaugural State of the Hops report.
Neighbouring Branxton also secured a place among the nation’s top 20 beer-loving communities, finishing in 16th.
The report examined purchasing trends across Australia, using sales data from Dan Muprhy’s and BWS stores to identify the areas where beer makes up the largest share of alcohol sales.
While Queensland dominated the national rankings, Kurri Kurri was the state’s top spot, highlighting the town’s enduring connection to pub culture and social gatherings centred around a cold beer.
The ratings also sparked plenty of discussion online, with many locals embracing Kurri Kurri’s latest accolade.
One commentor wrote, “Kurri Kurri you are on fire. Leading the way for NSW.”
Others joked that the result proved locals were just as happy enjoying a beer at home as they were at a pub, reflecting the town’s long-standing reputation for appreciating its alcohol.
The report also paints a picture of changing drinking habits across the country.
While beer remains Australia’s most popular alcoholic beverage overall, consumers are increasingly choosing a broader range of styles than in previous years.
Mid-strength beer is becoming a more common choice, while low-alcohol and alcohol-free options continue to attract new drinkers looking to moderate their consumption without giving up the experience.
Craft styles and imported beers are also continuing to gain popularity, reflecting a shift towards greater variety and experimentation among Australian consumers.
Despite those changing tastes, the Hunter’s strong showing suggests traditional beer culture remains alive and well.
Branxton’s inclusion in the national rankings further highlights the Hunter’s place among Australia’s most beer-friendly regions, with two local communities recognised for their preference for a cold ale.
