The Newcastle Knights have secured the future of rising back-rower Francis Manuleleua, extending his contract through to the end of the 2028 NRL season.

The 22-year-old has made eight NRL appearances in 2026 after debuting against the New Zealand Warriors at McDonald Jones Stadium in Round 3.

Born in New Zealand, Manuleleua was first identified by Knights head of recruitment Peter O’Sullivan as a 14-year-old and has continued to develop since joining Newcastle.

O’Sullivan said the contract extension reflected the forward’s progress and commitment during the past 18 months.

“We are very excited to see where Francis can get to in his career,” he said.

“Francis thoroughly deserves this extension. He has worked extremely hard and come a long way in the past 18 months since joining the club.”

O’Sullivan said Manuleleua’s performances in the NSW Cup and NRL had earned the respect of his teammates and Newcastle’s coaching staff.

“Francis is one of the most naturally gifted players we have at the Knights,” he said.

“His ability to find space is second to none and his upside is limitless, but it’s his toughness, hard work and effort plays which have gained the most respect from the group.”

Knights head coach Justin Holbrook said Manuleleua’s improved work ethic had helped him establish himself at NRL level.

“He has always had the talent. What was lacking was the work ethic,” Holbrook said.

“To his credit, Francis has turned that around to get himself into a position to play NRL and become a regular NRL player.”

Holbrook said the young forward’s attention to detail had allowed him to continue improving throughout the season.

“We are thrilled he has decided to continue his career with us at the Knights,” he said.

The extension gives Manuleleua the opportunity to further cement his place in Newcastle’s NRL squad over the coming seasons.
