Australian Rugby League (ARL) Commissioner Wayne Pearce is confident the Newcastle Knights will bounce back stronger than ever.
Following the departure of coach Adam O’Brien after six years and claiming the unwanted wooden spoon for the fifth time in 2025, the Hunter organisation appears set to undergo another rebuild.
But, the NRL legend believes it’s not all doom and gloom, especially with Dylan Brown (Parramatta Eels) and Trey Mooney (Canberra Raiders) heading to the region.
“Look, I understand why the fans aren’t happy with what’s transpired recently,” Pearce said.
“Newcastle supporters are probably the most passionate in the game.
“However, with Peter Parr stepping into the role of CEO [on 1 November], that’s a great move.
“He’s a local boy, knows the area and has a fantastic reputation.
“Peter did a similar job at the North Queensland Cowboys, when they won the club’s maiden premiership in 2015.
“So, he’s got the runs on the board.
“He’ll have a strong idea of what needs to happen moving forward.
“I think the Knights are certainly in good hands with Peter at the helm.”
Pearce, who is the special guest at the Sleapy’s Foundation fundraising luncheon at Souths Merewether on Friday 10 October, admitted a successful Newcastle was vital to the NRL’s cause.
“Everyone’s aware it’s a rugby league heartland,” he said.
“Even when the side isn’t travelling the best, people still flock to McDonald Jones Stadium.
“The city’s also hosted Women’s State of Origin matches and the inaugural NRLW Magic Round.
“That says a lot about the Hunter.
“So, when the Knights are doing well, rugby league’s doing well.”
The Balmain Tigers icon has a soft spot for Newcastle, too, after his son, Mitchell, spent four seasons (2018-2021) at the club.
“He loved his time there,” Pearce said.
“Mitch played 71 of his 350 matches with the Knights, he captained the side and led them to the play-offs on a couple of occasions.
“He also chalked up his 300th first grade game at Newcastle, so he has fond memories of the place.
“He’s living in France these days and recently celebrated the birth of his daughter, Alyia.
“I’m so happy for him.”
