Knights add another piece to NRL puzzle

SHARE

The Newcastle Knights have added an important piece to its halves puzzle with the signing of Sandon Smith.

After a stint with the Sydney Roosters, the Central Coast junior recently put pen to paper on a four-year deal, which will keep him in the Hunter until the end of 2029.

He’s the third major off-season recruit, following in the footsteps of Dylan Brown (Parramatta Eels) and Trey Mooney (Canberra Raiders).

Smith, 22, boasts 46 NRL appearances.

He made his debut off the bench in round 14, 2023, to help Trent Robinson’s men secure a thrilling 25-24 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs in his hometown of Gosford.

Earlier this year, he scored 22 points – and a place in rugby league’s Anzac Day history – after leading the Roosters to a 46-18 demolition of the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Smith collected the Ashton-Collier Medal as player of the match for his impressive 22-point haul.

Newcastle’s head of recruitment Peter O’Sullivan admitted the Knights were delighted to snare his services for new coach Justin Holbrook.

“It’s a full circle moment for Sandon,” he said.

“Being a Central Coast junior, he represented the Knights in our pathways, so it is great to see him back.

“He has a brilliant game sense, with the ability to break a match open and create opportunities for those around him, along with being one of the best goalkickers in the NRL.

“We know Sandon is dynamic half.

“However, he can also play hooker.

“His combination with Dylan [Brown], Fletcher Sharpe and Kalyn Ponga gives us great coverage and depth in all our spine options.

“We believe Sandon will help create plenty of attacking opportunities and exciting combinations for the Knights.”
