Kmart opening biggest Charlestown Square milestone in 20 years

SHARE

A huge crowd flocked to Charlestown Square this week to attend one of the most highly-anticipated retail openings in two decades.

That’s thanks to a new Kmart, which officially welcomed punters on Thursday 4 December.

Transforming the former Target site into a modern, next-generation outlet, the store is expected to draw thousands of shoppers from across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and the wider Hunter.

It’ll also cement Charlestown Square’s position as the region’s leading retail destination.

The opening marked a major milestone in the centre’s evolution, adding one of the country’s most sought-after retailers to its already strong mix.

It underscores Charlestown Square’s commitment to expanding choice, elevating the customer experience and meeting strong community demand throughout the Hunter.

In addition to Kmart, adidas and W Cosmetics will also open stores at the centre this month.

That adds even more variety ahead of the peak holiday shopping season.

Designed with Kmart’s newest store layout, customers will enjoy a streamlined floorplan for easier shopping, and improved product displays, self-service checkouts and Click & Collect, and a bright, modern design tailored for high-traffic visitation.

The full transformation of the former Target space follows months of construction and significant investment from Charlestown Square and Kmart.

Centre marketing manager Sarah Kane said the Kmart opening represented a significant milestone for the region.

“This is very exciting news for Charlestown Square – and especially for our customers,” she explained.

“Our community has been asking for a Kmart store for a very long time.

“So, we are thrilled to be delivering exactly that – just in time for Christmas.

“The new Kmart will bring even greater value, choice and convenience to families across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland.

“With adidas and W Cosmetics also opening in December, we’re entering a very exciting time for the centre.

“We can’t wait to welcome shoppers through our doors.”

With holiday visitation already building in the lead-up to Christmas, the arrival of Kmart and other retail offerings is expected to substantially increase foot traffic during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
