Kids make a splash at Charlestown’s new pool

A first-class indoor facility providing children with more opportunities to learn how to swim has finally opened in Charlestown.

It’s the result of a $1.1 million project at the Charlestown Swim Centre and is the first purpose-built facility operated by Lake Macquarie City Council.

“Every parent should have peace of mind that their child will be safe in and around the water,” swim centre team leader Christoper Wilson said.

“This indoor facility has allowed us to expand our learn-to-swim program, ensuring more families have access to classes”.

With a depth ranging from 60 centimetres to one metre, the heated pool provides young swimmers with a comfortable, modern environment in which to learn.

Classes at the facility are open to children from six months of age and upwards, running Monday to Saturday.

With up to six classes able to run simultaneously in the 16 metre pool, it will allow more children to participate in the learn to swim program.

Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said it was critical children have basic swimming and water safety skills at an early age.

“Lake Macquarie families historically enjoy the outdoors and swimming at pools, rivers, beaches and of course, our beautiful lake,” Cr Fraser said.

“A facility like this is needed to keep up with the growing community needs and to enhance access to water safety services.”

Dedicated learn to swim centres are proposed for West Wallsend, Speers Point and Swansea in Council’s Draft Aquatic Facilities Strategy.

The project is jointly funded by Council and the Federal Government, which contributed $600,000 through Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program.
