The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens in Heatherbrae is set to transform into a wonderland of nature and discovery this July, with a line-up of engaging events designed to captivate visitors of all ages.
At the heart of the festivities is the much-anticipated Children’s Discovery Day on Tuesday 8 July, a highlight of the school holiday calendar that promises fun, learning, and adventure for families across the Hunter region.
Children’s Discovery Day
The Children’s Discovery Day on Tuesday 8 July is a signature event that blends environmental education with hands-on fun.
From 10am to 2pm, kids can explore the gardens onboard the discovery train, take part in nature-themed craft activities, and enjoy interactive workshops that spark curiosity about the natural world.
The day also features a jumping castle, face painting and market stalls, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Families can refuel with a sausage sizzle, food van, or a visit to the Kookaburra Café, which will be open for coffee and light meals.
Alternatively, bring a picnic and relax in the beautiful garden surrounds.
Entry is $5 for children, $10 for adults, $25 for families, and $7 for pension card holders.

The gardens’ July school holiday program offers a variety of events to keep young minds engaged:
- Gundabooka Bush Foods Walk, Talk and Tasting on Sunday 13 July, 10.30am – noon
Join Aboriginal guide Kevin Riley for an enlightening talk about bush foods.
Enjoy sampling some bush food fare before the walk and then see the plants growing along the Gundabooka Trail. $25 per adult, $15 per child.
- Kid’s Fancy Dress Winter Disco on Tuesday 15 July, noon – 3pm
Warm up your dancing shoes and find your best winter costume to wear to the Kid’s Winter Fancy Dress Disco! Join us for three hours of fun with DJs Neil and Rebecca.
Dance the afternoon away and win some prizes, too.
- Fantasy Garden Succulent Bowls for Kids on Friday 18 July, 10.30am –noon
Let’s get creative! Design and plant up your own mini fantasy garden using succulent plants and figurines.
Learn about nature as you go and take home your own plant to grow. $20 per participant, $5 per accompanying adult.
